Only, an eyeball in the mud, And Hopkins, Flat and pale and gory! —— • —— • —— • —— • —— • —— • —— • —— 【《階段》之三(1914年)】 華萊士·史蒂文斯“異鄉人·花環”(1879生—1955卒) 【紅霞譯】 這是榮耀的苦澀味道, 再現的並非 像阿伽門農神話故事。 僅有一隻眼球落地, 如同霍普金斯詩中, 沉鬱、蒼白和血腥! 【注】振鈴石敲擊時會發出鐘聲般的共鳴,世界各地的巨石場都有記載:英國湖區的音樂石,賓州上黑埃迪的響石,澳大利亞的響岩與貝爾“英俊”岩(Bell Rock)岩。它們被稱為“石音器”,卻至今無人能提出可靠的理論解釋其成因。賓夕法尼亞“山林”東南部這些巨石場來自紐瓦克“新方舟”盆地輝綠岩岩床——2億年前侏羅紀早期,地殼拉伸,岩漿上升注入沉積盆地,橄欖石與輝石結晶後沉向底部,形成一層厚約10—15英尺/3.0—4.6米的獨特岩石單元。更新世冰緣環境的反覆凍融,讓這層岩石崩解成今天這片廣闊的巨石場。 我蹲在巨石場中間,用錘子輕輕敲擊腳邊一塊灰綠色的石頭,它發出一聲短促而清晰的迴響,像遠處鐘樓被風碰了一下。不是所有石頭都會響——大約只有三分之一能發聲。而那些被帶回實驗室的石頭,據說立刻失去了音樂能力,仿佛聲音只願意在這片土地里存着,一離開就收回了它的秘密。它不認人,只認山。 我放下錘子,用手掌貼在石頭表面——粗糙、冰涼,那些晶粒硌着皮膚,帶着一種不願妥協的硬度。它曾在地下深處被岩漿燒透、被山體擠壓變形,又在千萬年裡被冰川刨過、被河水磨過、被烈日與嚴寒反覆撕扯。一萬次凍融,一萬次裂開又癒合,才變成今天這樣一塊會唱歌的石頭。我貼着它,仿佛感到一陣微弱的震顫——不是溫度,是從漫長忍耐里沉澱下來的某種東西,像人的低聲。那一刻我忽然明白:石頭的聲音從來不是被敲出來的,而是被壓了億年之後,從縫隙里漏出來的。 Today in History(歷史上的今天):

Sonorous Boulder Field, along Channels w/ Adjoining Fissures, Potholes w/ Dents, & Old Surfaces Intensely Pitted
(巨石場·溝渠與裂縫相連,坑窪凹陷,老舊路面布滿麻點 02-11-2022) Lithophonic Rock in these boulder fields of southeastern Pennsylvania and central New Jersey formed from a group of diabase sills in the Newark Basin. The sills were formed when the stretching of the Earth's crust allowed mafic magma to travel up from the upper mantle and be injected into the sedimentary basin 200 million years ago (during the early Jurassic Period). Phenocrysts of two minerals that had crystallized in the upper mantle, olivine and pyroxene, quickly settled out of the magma and collected along the base of the sills. When fully solidified, this crystal-rich layer formed a separate rock unit 10-15 ft (3.0-4.6 m) thick. By the Pleistocene Epoch, the sills had been exposed to the surface by crustal uplift and erosion. During the Pleistocene, outcrops of the olivine diabase were not buried by the glacial sheets; however, they were subjected to severe freezing, or periglacial, conditions. The periglacial environment caused the outcrops to be broken into extensive boulder fields.(響石場的石音岩石·【註解】見上)
