【注】愛丁“山上”堡曾經是一座被煤煙熏黑的城市。老城擠在從城堡到荷里路德“聖十字架”宮的山脊上，房子挨着房子，煙囪密密麻麻地戳向天空。冬天家家戶戶燒煤取暖，煙霧從煙囪里湧出來，被狹窄的巷子堵住散不開，整座老城像一口倒扣的鍋，灰黃的霧沉甸甸地壓着石板路和行人的肩膀。石頭被熏黑了，聖吉爾斯“守護者”大教堂的尖塔、城堡的城牆，全裹上了一層洗不掉的硬殼。

外號也是那時候叫開的。Auld Reekie，老煙熏。這名字帶着愛丁堡人特有的自嘲和倔強，他們不遮掩，不粉飾，乾脆把外號接過來大大方方地掛在身上。去愛丁堡的酒吧跟人說“老煙熏”，沒有人會問你在說什麼——那是他們自己給自己起的名字，帶着煤灰的味道，帶着壁爐的溫暖，帶着一種冷颼颼的幽默感。

後來煤氣和電來了，煙囪一根根安靜下來，籠罩城市多年的灰蓋子也散了，陽光終於照進了幾百年沒見過直射光的牆角；可老城的石牆上還能蹭下一層黑粉，那是“老煙熏”留給這座城市的胎記，洗不掉的。每年冬天還是有人燒壁爐，細細的煙從老煙囪里飄出來，升到高處和雲混在一起，分不清哪是煙哪是雲。我站在這座城市裡，忽然覺得“老煙熏”這個外號已經從當年的調侃變成了一種懷念——它提醒着這座石頭城市，愛丁堡曾經怎樣在煙霧裡活着，怎樣在寒冷中燒着自己的煤，把臉熏得漆黑，可就在那層漆黑下面，藏着蘇格蘭最亮的文學、最烈的酒和最硬的頭顱。我摸了摸牆上的黑粉，手指頭髒了，心裡卻覺得踏實：有些東西，黑了才亮。

2015年，愛丁堡被聯合國教科文組織列入《世界遺產名錄》。
