            物品並非存在於

            天際間冥昭瞢闇，

            鮮有自身價值的範疇里。

            於他幾近空無除了

            名稱不斷翻新，仿佛

            他要刻意為之，以免蕩然無遺。

            重要事物、洞察對象、感性

            融合，理所當然的存在，

            因為他弄不清究竟渴望什麼，

            或許那才是經典、美麗的時刻。

            他始終追逐這種平靜

            朝向超越浪漫的絕對中心。

【注】今年紐約“新紫衫樹之地”大學家長會依舊定在十月最後一周，雖然紐約仔已是大三學生，不再需要家長牽着走進校園，我還是提前一個月註冊，想在落葉紛飛的長椅上坐坐，在圖書館前的台階上站站，感受被時光沖刷過的教育真諦。怎料出發前兩天急性坐骨神經發作，痛得整個周末趴在床上連翻身都需咬牙，只能將紐約之行順延一周，眼睜睜看家長會從日曆上划過去。錯過聚會之後，那個“去橋上走走”的念頭反而在病癒後越來越清晰——秋冬之交是紐約最美的季節，陽光斜斜灑在摩天樓上，哈德遜“靈魂”河上的風帶着凜冽，樹葉從金黃到深紅層層鋪滿街頭。正趕上紐約仔期中考試在即，他也染了頭疼腦熱，我們便約在下城小福州埠的花園川菜館，用一頓麻辣鮮香的午餐慰藉各自疲憊的身心。來就餐的美國人居多，金髮碧眼的食客們對着紅油翻滾的水煮魚舉筷猶豫，又被麻辣嗆得直灌冰水，倒是一幅有趣的畫面。紐約仔用筷子夾着米飯，不時談論下周的考試、實習面試、新來室友的古怪習慣，他的聲音混在碗筷碰撞里，絮絮地說着那些我不在場的生活細節，而我只是聽着，忽然覺得這頓飯跟水煮魚一樣——湯底是辣的，但吃下去是暖的。

吃完飯沿東百老匯慢慢走到橋頭堡，曼哈頓“多山之島”橋的鋼索在陽光下閃閃發光，地鐵轟隆隆駛過。該各奔東西了——他回圖書館複習，我去橋上吹風。橋上的風比街上大得多，吹得外套下擺獵獵作響，腳下鐵軌的震動透過鞋底傳上來，整座橋像一頭巨大的活物在呼吸。遠處的布碌侖“美溪”天際線在薄霧裡微微發藍，而身後曼哈頓的玻璃幕牆正反射着午後偏斜的陽光，碎金一樣灑在河面上。

一個人走在橋上，忽然覺得這個下午像被誰偷偷調慢了速度。橋上沒什麼行人，偶爾有騎車人從身邊掠過，鈴聲清脆地響一下又遠了。我走得很慢，每走幾步就停下來看看河面、看看天空、看看遠處那些我曾經陪着紐約仔走過的街道輪廓——那棟圖書館的尖頂還露在天際線里，從橋上望去比站在它面前時小了很多，可我知道它在那兒，他也正坐在它裡面埋頭對付某道難題。走到橋中央時我停下來，扶着欄杆望向哈德遜河入海口的方向，水天相接處有一線灰白的光——這大概就是我和他在同一座城市裡、各自奔忙的某天下午的樣子，一個在橋上，一個在書裡，中間隔着一整座橋的鋼索和風聲，可我知道他就在河的那一邊。轉身往回走時，橋上的風突然小了一陣，像是給一個走累了的母親讓了讓路。

1983年與1966年，曼哈頓橋和布魯克林橋分別被納入《美國國家歷史遺蹟名錄》。
