今年娃兒10個星期的暑假，從本周一開始正式鋪開。小學二年級剛在上周四結業，他還沒來得及消停幾天，就直奔捷門堂報到，投入早九晚四的全日制夏令營。捷門堂的項目琳琅滿目：科學、寫作、數學、繪畫、戲劇、樂隊、機器人設計、游泳、射箭、足球——大多以半天為單位，每項至少註冊一周，可按上午下午自由搭配，最長持續六周。唯一例外的是迪斯尼兒童歌舞劇《阿拉丁“信仰的高貴”》，大班主力要搭上五周全日制，小班合唱伴舞則堅持每天上午排練，連排四周。家長只要根據孩子的喜好任意拼配，就能組合出一份像模像樣的夏令營菜單。臨近結束時有作品展覽供營員施展才華，三次大型匯報演出則為初學或老練的演員提供實踐的舞台。 費用方面，每周五天平均400—500美元，不算午餐和下午四到六點的延時看管，在美國屬中等水平。食堂提供冷制三明治、熱披薩和冰凍飲料，每頓五六塊，需註冊時一併預付，不退夥；也可自備午餐。延時看管每天約50美元，給家長留足通勤的餘地。捷門堂每年一月開始宣傳新暑期內容，若在三月十日前繳費，還能享受10%的折扣。我們考量了娃兒的興趣，也權衡了交通——離家到營地、再轉去上班，單程三四十分鐘，雖比直達公司多出一倍，尚不至於離譜，因此成了最終選擇。最終，娃兒為自己設計了卡通臉譜繪畫、樂高積木、迪斯尼歌舞劇、網球和混合娛樂的組合套餐，如期誕生。 娃兒翹首以盼。開學第一天，他背着鼓鼓囊囊的包跳下車，頭也不回地奔向集合地點，像一枚被彈弓彈出去的石子。我站在車旁多看了幾秒，看他混進一群穿各色T恤的孩子中間，很快就分不清哪個是他了。忽然覺得，這個暑假是他第一次用自己的選擇拼出的時間——那些活動是他自己挑的，組合是他自己搭的，甚至連報名時討論“要不要省下10%”時，他也發表了意見。也許這就是暑假真正的意義：不在於學會了什麼技能，而在於他第一次用自己的意願，填滿了一整段空白的時間。而那片被他親手填滿的夏天，會比他被動接受的所有課程，都更長久地留在他的記憶里。  Design Technology @ Germantown Academy (GA)
