虽说宾夕法尼亚“山林”州公立学校的教育质量比邻居新泽西差出十万八千里，可考试的花样一点都不逊色。进入三年级后，章节考、阶段考、单元考、满月考、季度考络绎不绝——模拟与实战交替，成绩高低直接挂钩作业多少。每次满分者，卡利科夫“小圣杯”(Kalikow)老师不仅豁免附加作业，还亲手送上一块时尚甜点。这一周尤其热闹：周二选举日放假，其余五天连轴转，连周末也不放过——周一语文，周三数学，周四科学，周五社会常识，周日还有中文学校的期中考试和YCT汉语考试，整个一个考试周。 学校不仅热衷“考”，也热衷“整”。笔试刚结束，实践活动便全面铺开。感恩节前，孩子写亲情友情题材的记事记物作文，又应卡利科夫老师的临时起意，起草了一篇三四页的童话剧本，讲火鸡家族在节日的生死存亡。“水利项目”是第一个科学课题：登陆公共电视网站学习浮力，再做“会跳舞的葡萄干”实验，向全班演示气泡如何帮助葡萄干在苏打中上下游弋，像救生衣产生浮力。演讲后老师从预测、步骤、数据、结论和口述四方面综合评分。社会常识课则要求找出四种不同比重的液体——消毒酒精、植物油、生理盐水、玉米糖浆——依次注入水瓶，观察它们按比重分层排列。而“挑战数学”则让孩子与四年级快班【注】一起学习代数几何，挑战不止来自数学本身。 我坐在餐桌旁，看他摊开那些实验报告和数学题，铅笔在纸上游走，偶尔停下来咬着笔帽发呆。那些考试、项目、分层实验，挤满了他的时间，却也在悄悄打磨另一种能力——不只是如何拿到高分，而是如何在密集的任务中，仍然留出一点空隙给自己。他会在做玉米糖浆实验时突然说：“妈妈，你看，比重最重的居然是最甜的。”那种突如其来的、与考试无关的发现，让我觉得这些被安排得密密匝匝的“教育”，终究还是留了一些缝隙，让好奇心自己钻了进来。而那些缝隙，也许比他完成的每一份满分作业，都更值得被记住。 【注】根据三年级宾州统考(PSSA)成绩，学校将四年级以上的学生划分成一个“快班”和三个“普通班”。
