         That nightingale who weeps so sweetly,

         perhaps for his brood, or his dear companion,

         fills the sky and country round with sweetness

         with so many piteous, bright notes,

         and it seems all night he stays beside me,

         and reminds me of my harsh fate:

         for I have no one to grieve for but myself,

       who believed that Death could not take a goddess.

         Oh how easy it is to cheat one who feels safe!

         Who would have ever thought to see two lights,

         clearer than the sun, make earth darken?

         Now I know that my fierce fate

         wishes me to learn, as I live and weep:

         nothing that delights us here is lasting.

【夜鶯婉轉而悲切地啼鳴】

自由人•彼特拉克(1304生—1374卒)

            夜鶯婉轉而悲切地啼鳴，

            也許是唱給小鳥或它的伴侶聽；

            天穹和田野都蕩漾着它的歌聲，

            曲調是那麼淒楚動人。

            歌聲似乎整夜伴隨着我，

            使我想起自己不幸的命運；

            除自己外，我不能向誰傾訴衷情，

            因為我不信，死亡會在女神面前降臨。

            多容易啊，要欺騙一個滿懷自信的人！

            誰會想到比太陽亮得多的兩道美麗的光芒，

            結果變為黑黑的一堆泥塵？

            現在我知道，我可怕的命運

            就是活着含淚去領會這一真情：

            塵世既沒有歡樂，也沒有永恆。

【注】被譽為“中世紀明珠”的塔奎尼亞擁有涵蓋約3,000年歷史的文化遺產，曾是伊特魯里亞“土著”人(Etruscan)的首都和羅馬人的定居點，尤以影響深刻的伊特魯里亞墓地而流芳萬世；伊特魯里亞於公元前8世紀—3世紀在意大利中部盛行。

2004年，塔奎尼亞的伊特魯里亞墓地被聯合國教科文組織納入《世界遺產名錄》。
