生日聚会已过去三个礼拜，娃儿忽然想起朋友捎来的礼物卡还没兑现，顿时脸热手烫，胸中那团刚消停的火又窜了起来。自圣诞老人点过卯，农历新年和生日庆典接踵而至，好事一浪高过一浪，礼物一个接着一个，像天上掉下的馅饼单冲他一人来。娃儿从不死要面子活受罪——那是妈妈的老皇历。他干脆铁了心，恭敬不如从命，早早张开大嘴，这回不一口吃成胖子，自己跟自己没完。 “听说美元正在贬值，人民币却在升值。”娃儿最近三句话不离这个话题。妈妈嘴上应着，心里却走起了神——娃儿虽降生在纽约往西一袋烟功夫的新泽西，可打小扎根宾州乡下，北京只回去过两回，来去匆匆，根本来不及感受经济大跃进，倒是美国的金融后患让他小小年纪就有了切肤之痛。“既然钱都会变，卡更靠不住。”娃儿耐着性子开导妈妈。“哦——难道卡会生仔？”“不——是——日子久了卡会过期！”“我咋没想到？”妈妈如梦初醒。“所以，”娃儿咽了口唾沫润嗓子，“我得抓紧换成礼物！” 可究竟是穿新鞋走老路，继续添置任天堂动感游戏？还是另辟蹊径，尝试崭新品牌？明天中文班期中考试在即，任天堂“神奇宝贝”黑白版又选那天首日发行——有些事情不来则罢，一来便势不可挡。坦率地说，有时不是你想不想赶时髦，而是这个前无古人的时代怂恿得你无法置身事外。我站在一旁，看着娃儿拿着那张礼物卡翻来覆去地端详，像在掂量一件大事。忽然觉得，他纠结的不是游戏本身，而是第一次意识到“选择”是一种需要自己承担后果的东西——选了动感游戏，就得放弃尝鲜的可能；选了新品牌，就得和熟悉的快乐告别。那张薄薄的礼物卡在他手里被翻了又翻，像一枚小型的人生指南针，正在教八岁的他辨认方向。而无论他最终选了哪一条路，这犹豫本身，都已经比任何一款游戏更早地写进了他的成长里。
