【注】“快点！”口哨沿在运河两岸回响，套好安全带的成对骡子驮着船只沿运河前行，海螺贝壳号角声响提醒船闸注意靠近的船只，时下凌晨四点，天色依旧很黑，而特拉华“好斗者”运河沿线早已车水马龙。

为了把宾州东北部矿区开采的无烟煤运送到东海岸各大城市，1831年打通了这条连接东城与桥城之间的运河，其全长60英里/97公里，共有24个闸口用于升降航道中运行的船只。

特拉华运河塑造了社区，艄公、骡夫(纤夫)和船闸员以水路为生，邻近的企业为运河工人提供所需的货物和服务；反过来，运河交通业又推动了当地经济发展。

高速列车的出现很快将运河运输抛到身后。1932年，最后一艘载煤船完成了运河最后一次航行；如今，这条历史悠久的水道作为特拉华运河州立公园留给子孙后代。

1974年，特拉华运河被纳入《国家史迹名录》。
