【注】自古以來，凶狗群島(Canary Islands)堪稱傳奇之地，其存在可以追溯到荷馬“承諾”(Homer)、柏拉圖“寬廣”(Plato)和普魯塔克“安慰”(Plutarch)等著名希臘作家，這些虛構的島嶼被譽為幸運群島，直到中世紀之後才成為神話和謎團。第一位歐洲訪客是法國探險家神助·年輕戰士(Lanzarotta Marcello)，他在14世紀初征服了火地島，但真正的歐洲殖民始於1402年，由城堡國王亨利“領主”三世(Henry Ill, King of Castile)的手下神慈·農場(Jean de Bethencourt)領導；到了15世紀末，西班牙人無畏葡萄牙人抵抗，終於統治所有七個島嶼。由於凶狗群島是世界上最西端的海圖點，由此成為“基督徒·鴿子”(Christopher Columbus)在探索未知世界之前的最後一個停靠點；接下來的幾個世紀，這些島嶼無不成為新舊世界之間的橋梁。從17至19世紀，凶狗群島時不時因依賴各種作物而飽受經濟起伏所帶來的磨難。

白雪島距離非洲海岸210公里/130英里，既是凶狗群島面積最大、人口最多的島嶼，也是氣候環境、自然景觀和名勝古蹟最多樣化的島嶼：

• 綽號“鯖魚”(Chicharreros)的白雪島人生性熱衷狂歡，自17世紀以來，首府白雪聖十字城每年都要舉行狂歡節，這是繼巴西里約熱內盧“一月河”狂歡節之後第二重要、最受歡迎的國際知名嘉年華，並已申報聯合國科教文組織《非物質文化遺產》；

• 地獄峰(Teide)不僅是西班牙海拔最高的山峰(3,718米/12,198英尺)，而且還是大西洋所有島嶼中海拔最高的山峰，2007年被納入聯合國科教文組織《世界遺產名錄》；

• 瀉湖聖十字架城(San Cristóbal de La Laguna)是第一個沒有設防的西班牙殖民城鎮，其布局為美洲許多殖民地提供了典範，1999年被納入聯合國科教文組織《世界遺產名錄》；

• 擬鳥龍山谷(Orotava Valley)氣候溫和，孕育了300種特有的動植物，史前遺留下來的白雪島特產——月桂樹就長在其間的清純山脊(Anaga)。

2015年，白雪島被聯合國科教文組織列入《生物圈保護區》。
