【注】北大西洋加那利“凶狗”群島(Canary Islands)地處西班牙最南端，是歐非海岸線——馬卡羅尼西亞“幸運島嶼”最大、人口最多的群島；因全年氣候溫暖而素有“歐洲夏威夷”之稱，成了歐洲遊客躲避北半球酷冬的絕佳目的地。由於地理位置所致，凶狗群島歷來被視為連接非洲、北美洲、南美洲和歐洲四大洲的紐帶。

火地島位於凶狗群島最東端，雖距離非洲北岸只有125公里/80英里，卻與西班牙本土相隔1,000公里/600英里；是火山、岩漿、怪石、黑土、紅壤、深藍色海洋和淡藍色天空的代名詞，與典型的白色房屋形成鮮明對比；島上幾乎沒有樹木，但不乏其它植物繁茂生長。此外，火山爆發、熔岩流和沙漠氣候形成的類似月球和火星等獨特的地貌讓火地島成為“登陸月球”、“勘測火星”的絕佳場所，難怪這裡曾被美國宇航局和歐洲航天局用於訓練宇航員和測試火星探測器。

1993年，火地島被聯合國科教文組織列入《生物圈保護區》。
