在美国，无论联邦大节还是州立小庆，人们总爱以集市的方式聚首——临时搭建的舞台旁，听一曲流行小唱，来一杯冰喳冷饮，吃一顿热狗披萨，聊天拉呱，各抒己见。我家童少特别喜欢这种过节方式，穿梭于热闹之中乐此不疲——精神上享受轻松，物质上饱尝优待。若节日恰逢周末，他准保叫“逍遥星期五”胖得喘起来，非得让“疯狂星期一”得瑟回老家。 俗话说：“年怕中秋月怕半，星期就怕礼拜三。”今年独立节确实来得“寸”，恰好落在一周的中轴日，前不靠超级星期六，后不挨安息星期天，虽仍公休，却少了长周末连续三天的感觉。加上最近两周美国东部持续高温（95─101oF/35─38oC），别说大人们被困在屋里，就连一向喜欢户外抛洒热汗的童少也几乎断了出门的念头。幸亏“烟花澹荡夜空，爆竹驱散热浪”，我们才与当地同胞一起，过了第236个普通而别样的国庆节。 入夜后，气温终于降了几度。我们来到镇中心的公园，草地上已经坐满了人。孩子们举着荧光棒在暮色中追逐，远处烧烤摊的烟雾升起来，被烟花的光一照，变成一种淡淡的金色。童少坐在我身边，手里攥着一根吃了一半的玉米棒子，正仰头看第一发礼花在深蓝的天幕上绽开。那光落在他仰起的脸上，像短暂的、被允诺的晴朗。我忽然觉得，这个不在长周末、卡在周三的独立节，或许正因为它来得突兀，才显得格外像一份意外的礼物——不需要长途旅行，不需要精心准备，只是像这样，在下了班后的傍晚走到草地上，坐下来，看烟花在头顶散成碎屑，然后继续过平常的日子。而这种“平常”，或许才是节日最本真的样子：不是逃离生活，而是暂时与生活拉开一点距离，然后发现它仍在那里，等着我们回去。节日的意义，不在于它能改变生活的轨迹，而在于它让你短暂地跳出日常的惯性，以一个旁观者的身份，重新打量自己正在过的生活。而那忽明忽暗的焰火，或许正是那种重新观看所需要的距离，在广袤的夜空中投下的标记。
