在美國，無論聯邦大節還是州立小慶，人們總愛以集市的方式聚首——臨時搭建的舞台旁，聽一曲流行小唱，來一杯冰喳冷飲，吃一頓熱狗披薩，聊天拉呱，各抒己見。我家童少特別喜歡這種過節方式，穿梭於熱鬧之中樂此不疲——精神上享受輕鬆，物質上飽嘗優待。若節日恰逢周末，他準保叫“逍遙星期五”胖得喘起來，非得讓“瘋狂星期一”得瑟回老家。 俗話說：“年怕中秋月怕半，星期就怕禮拜三。”今年獨立節確實來得“寸”，恰好落在一周的中軸日，前不靠超級星期六，後不挨安息星期天，雖仍公休，卻少了長周末連續三天的感覺。加上最近兩周美國東部持續高溫（95─101oF/35─38oC），別說大人們被困在屋裡，就連一向喜歡戶外拋灑熱汗的童少也幾乎斷了出門的念頭。幸虧“煙花澹蕩夜空，爆竹驅散熱浪”，我們才與當地同胞一起，過了第236個普通而別樣的國慶節。 入夜後，氣溫終於降了幾度。我們來到鎮中心的公園，草地上已經坐滿了人。孩子們舉着熒光棒在暮色中追逐，遠處燒烤攤的煙霧升起來，被煙花的光一照，變成一種淡淡的金色。童少坐在我身邊，手裡攥着一根吃了一半的玉米棒子，正仰頭看第一發禮花在深藍的天幕上綻開。那光落在他仰起的臉上，像短暫的、被允諾的晴朗。我忽然覺得，這個不在長周末、卡在周三的獨立節，或許正因為它來得突兀，才顯得格外像一份意外的禮物——不需要長途旅行，不需要精心準備，只是像這樣，在下了班後的傍晚走到草地上，坐下來，看煙花在頭頂散成碎屑，然後繼續過平常的日子。而這種“平常”，或許才是節日最本真的樣子：不是逃離生活，而是暫時與生活拉開一點距離，然後發現它仍在那裡，等着我們回去。節日的意義，不在於它能改變生活的軌跡，而在於它讓你短暫地跳出日常的慣性，以一個旁觀者的身份，重新打量自己正在過的生活。而那忽明忽暗的焰火，或許正是那種重新觀看所需要的距離，在廣袤的夜空中投下的標記。
