【注】诺里斯敦“北方城”西部历史街区，是蒙哥马利“巨人山”郡首府西侧一片安静内敛的住宅区。没有法院的高穹顶，没有火车站的钟楼，没有啤酒厂的烟囱——这里只有沿着街道一字排开的房子，和家家户户的日常生活。大约1,700座建筑密密麻麻地挤在纵横交错的街道上，多半是独立式联栋房：一栋挨着一栋，共用墙壁，却又各自独立。从街这头望到街那头，整齐的屋檐、整齐的门廊、整齐的窗户，像列队沉默的士兵。这片住宅区于1885年至1925年间开发——整整40年，正是美国工业革命席卷全国、铁路延伸至每个角落、城市疯狂扩张的时期。那些年的建筑风格也在此留下了痕迹：维多利亚“胜利女王”式的尖顶与彩色玻璃窗，安妮“恩典”女王式的不对称立面与角楼，殖民复兴式的对称与古典庄重，工匠风格的低矮屋顶与宽大门廊——从19世纪末到20世纪初，每一种风格都有代表，每一个年代都有痕迹，像一页页摊开的建筑史教科书。

走在西部历史街区的街道上，脚步自然慢下来。那些房子还在——有些住着人，有些空置，有些改成了公寓或办公室。它们都站在那里，像一群学会沉默的老人，等着愿意驻足的人。街角有个老人坐在摇椅上慢慢晃，几个孩子在路边玩耍，笑声清脆，一对年轻夫妇推着婴儿车走过，脸上是疲惫而满足的微笑。正是这种延续本身，构成了街区真正的历史感。

我停在一栋殖民复兴式的房子前，门廊的柱子漆成白色，窗前绣球花开得正盛。这样的街区，已不需要语言来讲述自己——时间替它说话。而那短暂的停留，已在它漫长的叙述里，添上一行微不足道却明亮的停顿。

以下绝大多数建筑物已载入《国家史迹名录》(Natl. Register of Historic Places)。
