桑迪颶風在萬聖節前兩天突襲美東，道路中斷，電力通訊癱瘓——連默克員工聯邦信貸聯盟的網絡和提款系統都失靈了一周，讓我體會什麼叫“叫天天不應，叫地地不靈”。出不了門倒不打緊，忙碌一年的項目被接連槍斃，正好藉機歇息；上不了網也無妨，眼不見大選驢象爭權，心不煩；取不了現鈔，便拿信用卡當令箭，倒也撐得過去。可內政外交刻不容緩——家長會、義工服務、清理斷樹、檢修下水、掃除滿院殘枝，件件十萬火急。幸好信用卡公司豁免災區利息與逾期罰款，人間溫情讓我領悟到愛的力量。 賓夕法尼亞“山林”州一年一度的萬聖節討糖傳統已延續60年，卻被桑迪攪得熱鬧不再。學區停電停課，孩子們索性把“停課還是請客”掛在嘴邊——只要不上學，樂不可支。新買的“吸血鬼”套裝成了擺設，娃兒勉強試穿照了張相，總算沒辜負我一片心意。錯後兩天，全校舉辦了個小型萬聖節聯歡，穿什麼已不重要，“酒”逢知己，人生幾何。 希望明年萬聖節，孩子們能再次喬裝打扮，挨門逐戶討糖，自由自在地“搗蛋還是請客”。我站在窗前，看娃兒把那套“吸血鬼”斗篷疊好收進抽屜。窗外街道恢復了日常的安靜，落葉還堆在路邊等着被打包運走。桑迪已經過去，可它留下的，不是破壞，而是暫停。那幾天沒有電、沒有網、沒有自動提款機的日子，像是從日曆上被硬生生撕下來的一頁——不屬於任何正常的秩序，卻意外地提供了一段喘息的時間。我們並排坐在沙發上，用一台備用收音機聽着關於風暴的報道，突然覺得，這樣的夜晚可能不會再有第二次了。而那個被錯過的、被替代的萬聖節，也會在記憶中被不斷修改——直到最後，留下的不再是缺憾，而是某個獨特年份里，一個“沒有討糖卻仍然被記住”的節日。我暗暗許願，明年的這時，他能夠重新穿上那身斗篷，敲響第一戶人家的門。  4th Grade Class @ Montgomery ES
