七年前的今天，娃儿即将出世。那时全家住在新泽西“草”州中部，距离纽约“新紫衫树之地”不到一小时车程。肯尼迪“武装的头脑”医学中心的陈医生——一位已成仨娃儿酷爸的菲律宾华人——特意建议我搜集些娃儿出生当天喜闻乐见的事：国内外大事、奥斯卡“众神之矛”电影、体育要况……希望娃儿的到来给太平盛世再添一份喜乐。娃儿诞生的那天，《纽约时报》各个版面都是欣欣向荣。我庆幸，自己终于搭上了"老来得子"的末班车。 那一阵子，厄尔尼诺“圣婴”(El Niño)和拉尼娜“美妞”(La Niña)交替兴风作浪，大雪下个不停，摄氏零下10多度的天气，地冻岂止三尺？难怪在我体内寄养了九个月的娃儿说什么也不肯出来。我犹豫再三，终于拿定主意——忍痛剖腹，也要把娃儿请出来。那一阵子，"哥伦比亚"号航天飞机在返程途中意外解体，七名宇航员全部罹难；伊拉克成为焦点，中东战争拉开序幕；《魔戒3·王者归来》横扫奥斯卡11项大奖；阿加西“大师”(Agassi)第四次捧起澳网冠军；严重急性呼吸综合症(SARS)席卷中国，世界卫生组织首次发出全球紧急警告；《自然》杂志报道人类进化始于35万年前；江泽民离任，胡锦涛接任国家主席……那一阵子，世界在我之外轰轰烈烈地转动着，而我全部的注意力，只集中在体内那个迟迟不肯见面的生命上。 多年后回望那个冬天，那些头版头条大多已模糊了。航天飞机的残骸、中东的战火、奥斯卡的奖杯、网球的落点、SARS的隔离线、进化的时间表、政权的更替——它们像车窗外的风景，一帧帧掠过，却未曾真正抵达我。真正被我记住的，是剖腹产手术台上那道光，是娃儿第一声啼哭穿透消毒水气味时的震颤，是陈医生把一团皱巴巴的、沾着血丝的小东西放到我胸口时，整个世界突然安静下来的那一秒。从那时起，国际形势于我而言，便有了另一种定义：他以每分钟呼吸多少次、每天睡了几个小时、每月长了多高，重新排列了“新闻”的先后顺序。如今他七岁了。再回头看那个风雪交加的冬天，我忽然明白——不是他来到了我的世界，而是他的到来，让这个世界第一次有了真正的头条。
