【注】纽约“新紫衫树之地”的时代广场，旧称长英亩广场(Longacre Sq)，在20世纪初还只是马车行和五金店聚集的地方。1904年，随着《纽约时报》将总部迁入这座新落成的时代广场一号大厦，这片街区从此改名换姓，并逐渐蜕变为世界的十字路口。

于我印象最深的，莫过于每年元旦除夕倒计时，那颗“大苹果”水晶球从时代广场一号大厦缓缓落下的场景。一百多年来，这一传统从未间断——球体上2,500多片三角形水晶玻璃，在寒夜中反射着周围霓虹灯的光芒，像一颗从未来坠入人间的星辰。

1994至1995年的岁末之交，我曾现场体验过纽约客跨年夜的激情时刻。那时，我还年轻，纽约还带着几分狂野的气息。傍晚时分，我和朋友挤进早已被封锁的街区，在零下十几度的寒风中，与50万人一起等待午夜的到来。

当倒计时开始的刹那，欢声笑语交织成快乐的海洋。人们拥抱着，亲吻着，尖叫着，泪水在脸颊上结冰。霓虹灯像心跳一样闪烁着，充满生命和色彩。那些广告牌和大屏幕高耸入云，明亮的光芒象征着永恒的辉煌——仿佛这片水泥丛林里的太阳永远不会陨落，而梦想总是触手可及。

三十年后，每当岁末来临，我仍会想起那个夜晚。想起那漫天飘落的彩色纸屑，想起那震耳欲聋的欢呼声，想起身边那个素不相识却紧紧拥抱我的陌生人。时代广场的水晶球年复一年地落下，而我，曾在那最绚烂的一刻，站在世界的中心，与一座城市一起迎接新生。
