【注】摩根“環海”圖書館藏在麥迪遜“神賜之子”大道與36街的交角，外表像一座文藝復興式的石砌宮殿，沉穩、安靜，不急着向路人開口。推開那扇厚重的銅門，世界瞬間換了一個頻率——外面的車聲被隔絕在幾層石牆之外，裡面是書籍、紙張、舊墨和木頭混合的氣息，像時間在這裡放慢了腳步，讓人忍不住也把腳步放輕一些。

圖書館的主廳是整棟建築的心臟。穹頂高聳，光線從半透明的天窗均勻地灑下來，落在三面環繞的落地書架上。書脊上的燙金字在幽暗中閃着細碎的亮光，像被誰小心擦拭過很多次。玻璃展櫃裡躺着那些如雷貫耳的名字——莫扎特的樂譜、貝多芬的手稿、狄更斯的小說章節、王爾德的信札。它們不是復製品，是真跡。那些紙張已經泛黃，邊角捲起，墨跡褪成褐色，可筆畫間的頓挫還在，仿佛書寫者剛剛放下筆，起身去倒了一杯茶。我彎下腰湊近去看莫扎特的一頁樂譜，音符密密麻麻，塗改的痕跡清晰可見——他寫錯了幾個音，劃掉，在旁邊重新畫上，沒有一絲猶豫。我忽然覺得，這些手稿最動人的地方，不在於它們的完美，而在於它們的來不及完美。

站在那盞黃銅檯燈下，我忽然意識到，摩根先生收藏這些，不是為了炫耀，也不是為了投資。他是真的怕它們沒了。怕莫扎特的那幾筆塗改被時間吞掉，怕王爾德寫在信紙邊緣的一句俏皮話再也無人讀到。他用金錢買下時間，用建築為它們造了一座不會被風雨侵蝕的洞穴。我伸手想摸一下書架，指尖快要碰到那排燙金的舊書脊時，又縮了回來——不是怕髒，是怕驚動了那些沉睡了100多年的字。它們認得莫扎特的手指，認得狄更斯的羽毛筆，認得王爾德低頭時投在紙上的影子。而我一個過路人，不該那麼隨便地碰它們。可就在那一刻，我覺得那些紙張也認得我——它們見過太多像我這樣的人，匆匆來過、屏息駐足，然後帶着一點說不清的東西轉身離開。那點說不清的東西，大概就是我此刻站在地鐵口、握緊衣領走向暮色時，覺得自己比進來時重了一點的原因。
