【Hope and Dashed Hope】

      Hope, hope, where can I find hope?

      Between the collapse of two waves,

      Between two rippled peaks,

     And in the valley of waves, there hides hope.

     If hope's peak never sinks into valleys,

     The sea shall lose its existence, for a waveless sea is

      A breathless bosom that breathes nothing but death,

      No matter how heroic, how grand it appears.

      History falls from crest to trough,

      And from trough rises to crest again.

      Hope is our helmsman

      When we sink into the rippled valley.

      Wall of waves seeks to bury our small craft,

      And dashed hopes seek to toss us into the abyss.

      We've climbed atop the billowing peak.

      Let red sun fill the cabin, sea breeze fill the sail.

【《希望與失望》】

北島(1949生—)

            希望，希望，在哪裡尋找希望？

            在兩個海浪的破滅之間，

            在兩個波峰之間，

            在波谷里蘊藏着希望。

            如果希望的波峰永遠不跌入下一個波谷，

            海洋將失去生命，沒有波濤的海洋，

            是沒有呼吸的胸膛，沒有呼吸的胸膛，

            再雄壯，再魁偉，也是死，寂靜的死。

            歷史從一個波峰跌入一個波谷，

            又從一個波谷升上一個波峰，

            希望是我們的掌舵者，

            當我們跌入一個波谷。

            浪牆想把我們的小舟埋葬，

            希望想把我們捲入深淵，

            但我們終又爬上新的波峰，

            讓紅日照滿船艙，海風吹滿船帆。

【注】城隍廟和豫園分別建於15世紀和16世紀，前者供奉守護本城的道教神祗，後者則為江南古典園林；兩者集江南傳統的優雅、道教的靈性以及繁華的商業氣息之大成，是上海舉足輕重的明清古老遺產與地標。
