            明暗对比反衬出

【注】按宾州人口排名、紧步费城(5.7百万)和匹兹堡(1.7百万)两大都市后尘、列居第三位的伯爵城(77万)被誉为第一座抵抗英国殖民者并最终导致美国独立战争的城市；南北交兵期间，为避免让英国军队掠去铸造大炮，著名的自由钟(当时称为宾州议会大厦钟)就是从首都费城秘密转移到位于市中心高地德国人福音归正教堂(High German Evangelical Reformed Church)地下室严加保护的。之后，“这是暴君的下场”("Sic semper tyrannis" in Latin or "thus always to tyrants" in English)便成了伯爵城座右铭。

18世纪伯爵城成立初期，德国移民占据主导力量，尽管英文为官方语言，但德语极为盛行，由于两种语言“v”、“g"等发音不同，很多双关语应运而生，最为著名的俗语有：

The pie is all. (all gone) “馅饼就是一切”(一切都结束了)

It wonders (mystifies) me.“我很好奇(困惑)”

19后期—20世纪中叶鼎盛时期，伯爵城不仅成为全国钢铁和铁路行业的领军都市，而且还大力发展啤酒酿造产业，直到第一次世界大战后当地粘土被认定特别适于生产建筑用砖和耐火砖，才开始拓展砖业，砖成为第一批通过铁路运出伯爵城地区的产品，进而行销全国。食品加工、商业屠宰等也始于伯爵城；随着工业化广泛推广，伯爵城还是主要的银行和金融中心。凭借自身诸多辅助生产链，丝绸发展成该市最大的产业，并一直保持到20世纪后期；世界上第一台晶体管在伯爵城西部电气工厂开始生产；到20世纪中期，阿伦敦已成为继费城和纽约市之后主要零售和娱乐中心。

20世纪末锈带(Rust Bell)时期，由于伯爵城不断增加税收和限制扩大城市范围而导致婴儿潮一代外流；同时，美国东北部制造业开始遭受去工业化的冲击，许多位于该地的企业关闭或迁离，高薪工业工作逐渐被低薪服务业工作取代。

21世纪修整期，伯爵城试图重振服务业和制造业雄风。

目前，伯爵城主要有以下15处文化遗产被列入《国家史迹名录》(Natl. Register of Historic Places)：
