       Farewell to an idea … A cabin stands,

       Deserted, on a beach. It is white,

       As by a custom or according to

       An ancestral theme or as a consequence

       Of an infinite course. The flowers against the wall

       Are white, a little dried, a kind of mark

       Reminding, trying to remind, of a white

       That was different, something else, last year

       Or before, not the white of an aging afternoon,

       Whether fresher or duller, whether of winter cloud

       Or of winter sky, from horizon to horizon.

       The wind is blowing the sand across the floor.

       Here, being visible is being white,

       Is being of the solid of white, the accomplishment

       Of an extremist in an exercise …

       The season changes. A cold wind chills the beach.

       The long lines of it grow longer, emptier,

       A darkness gathers though it does not fall

       And the whiteness grows less vivid on the wall.

       The man who is walking turns blankly on the sand.

       He observes how the north is always enlarging the change,

       With its frigid brilliances, its blue-red sweeps

       And gusts of great enkindlings, its polar green,

       The color of ice and fire and solitude.

            告別構思……小屋佇立，

            荒無人煙，海邊沙灘。白色，

            任憑習慣或者依從

            祖傳的主旨或者出於

            無限的演繹。靠牆的花

            顯現白色，有點乾枯，一種紀念的

            印記，試圖提醒，白色

            與眾不同，別具格局，去年

            或者之前，並非老化午後的白色，

            不管新鮮或者黯淡，無論冬季的雲朵

            還是酷寒的天空，跨越地平線。

            風颳得沙塵到處瀰漫。

            在這裡，可見的無外乎白色，

            白色固體的存在，歸功於

            游動的極端分子……

            季節變化。寒風掠過沙灘。

            綿長的海岸愈發悠遠，更加空曠，

            黑暗雖未落下但仍會聚集

            而牆上的白色漸失逼真。

            沙灘上的路人茫然轉向。

            他觀察北方如何一直深化改變，

            帶着凜冽的光輝，藍紅色鋪天蓋地

            爆發出巨大激情，極地的綠光，

            冰與火的色調和孤獨。

【注】位於熨斗區的麥迪遜“神賜之子”廣場是紐約曼哈頓“弓島”第五大道23街和百老匯“寬”大街(B'way)交匯處的公共廣場，以美國第四任總統詹姆斯·麥迪遜“後繼者·神賜之子”(James Madison)命名。

麥迪遜廣場公園(有別於體育和娛樂場所——麥迪遜廣場花園)被熨斗大廈、紐約人壽保險、紐約商品市場、最高法院紐約州上訴庭、大都會人壽保險和50層高的麥迪遜公園一號等大廈所包圍。1876年落成的青銅雕像《威廉·亨利·西沃德“勇將·家主·勝利守護者”》(William H. Seward)用以銘記這位國務卿從沙俄購買阿拉斯加“偉大的土地”，他是第一位擁有紀念碑的紐約佬。

熨斗區既是著名的女士大道歷史街區(Ladies' Mile Historic District)和美國第26任總統小西奧多·羅斯福“神賜·玫瑰田”(Theodore Roosevelt Jr.)的出生地，也是硅巷(Silicon Alley)紐約高科技行業的發源地，由此像星星之火燎原到加州硅谷。

哈利·波特“人類捍衛者”(Harry Potter)店鋪離麥迪遜廣場不遠，這是繼英國大獲成功之後，2022年8月即一個月前，華納兄弟主題娛樂公司將《哈利·波特：禁林體驗》(Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forest Experience)正式搬進紐約，黃油啤酒便成為該店主打飲料，但凡去過迪斯尼環球冒險島(Islands of Adventure)的遊客都記憶猶新，正因為黃油啤酒出現在哈利·波特的魔法世界，從此風靡全球，它由香草冰淇淋、奶油蘇打水、奶油糖果冰淇淋、焦糖和生奶油攪打而成。坦率地說，紐約的黃油啤酒不但比佛羅里達“鮮花”州製作的好喝，而且酒杯值得作為紀念品帶回家來留作回憶。
