It shows that you understand content and can present relevant information. --Read the article more than one. --Don’t include too much information, or too little. --A summary is short and contain the main ideas of an article. 8 steps: 1. Skim through the text. Read the text fast- headings, first sentencesof paragraphs, etc. to get a general idea of the article. Note bold faced words-which indicate those words are important. 2. Read again –straight through. Try not to look up too many words.Just try to get the tone, meaning and main ideas.Tone – feeling, emotion, inform you about something. 3. Reread! Active Reading. Responding to the text. Highlighting, Making notes, thinking about anything interesting or things you don’t understand. Underline topic sentences and key facts. Label what’s important and what is not important to summarize. Topic sentences are the main ideas of a paragraph. Look for them and the main ideas of a paragraph. Look for them and what support the author uses to support the topic sentences. 4. Think of your thesis statement – one sentence that explains what your paper is about. 5. Use the thesis sentence as your introductory sentence. 6. Write in present tense, cite the author and article title. Your summary should be 1/3of the original. 7. Use quotes for direct language. Example: Kathy says “It’s viewed as plagiarism.”Those are her words, so I put them in quotes. 8. DON’T put in your opinion. ONLY write what the authors main points are. |
