Prophecies concerning the genealogy and origin of Jesus Christ and their fulfillments Posted on 2010/02/16 by lambfollower
The Old Testament is filled with types and prophecies. Typologically speaking, the center and focus of the entire Old Testament is actually Jesus Christ the Son, the second of the Trinity. Prophetically speaking, all the prophecies in the Old Testament concerning His first coming and His incarnation have been fully fulfilled, and all the rest are and will be fulfilled in the time to come. The genealogy of Jesus Christ is of great significance. We need to see that our Lord Jesus Christ is the complete God and the perfect Man, fully divine and fully human. Any teachings the deny His humanity is as heretic as those that deny His divinity. His genealogy is especially important for demonstrating His origin as the Son of Man in various aspects. Bless this fact! So many prominent figures, holy items, and blessed promises all pointed to, merged into, and fulfilled in this marvelous God-Man, our Lord Jesus Christ! To balance a little bit, we also need to be cautious not to pay too much attention to genealogies, but to God’s New Testament economy, just as Paul exhorted Timothy “to remain in Ephesus in order that you might charge certain ones not to teach different things Nor to give heed to myths and unending genealogies, which produce questionings rather than God’s economy, which is in faith.” (1 Timothy 1:3-4) Concerning His genealogy The Seed of the woman Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman And between your seed and her seed; He will bruise you on the head, But you will bruise him on the heel. Galatians 4:4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under law, Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and will bear a son, and she will call his name Immanuel. Matthew 1:23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel” (which is translated, God with us). Luke 1:26-35 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, To a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, Rejoice, you who have been graced! The Lord is with you. And she was greatly troubled at this saying and began reasoning what kind of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found grace with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to Him the throne of David His father, And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end. But Mary said to the angel, How will this be, since I have not known a man? And the angel answered and said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore also the holy thing which is born will be called the Son of God. The Seed of Abraham Genesis 12:2 And I will make of you a great nation, And I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. Genesis 13:15-16 For all the land that you see I will give to you and to your seed forever. And I will make your seed as the dust of the earth, so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then your seed can also be numbered. Genesis 15:5 And He brought him outside and said, Look now toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them. And He said to him, So shall your seed be. Whatever Sarah says to you, listen to her voice, for in Isaac shall your seed be called. Genesis 22:17-18 I will surely bless you and will greatly multiply your seed like the stars of the heavens and like the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of his enemies. He does not say, “And to the seeds,” as concerning many, but as concerning one: “And to your seed,” who is Christ. Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you; for to you and to your seed I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I swore to Abraham your father. And I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven and will give to your seed all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed, Luke 3:34 The son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, Romans 9:7 Neither is it that because they are the seed of Abraham, they are all children; but, “In Isaac shall your seed be called,”
The Seed of Jacob Genesis 28:13-14 And there was Jehovah, standing above it; and He said, I am Jehovah, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie, I will give to you and to your seed. And your seed will be as the dust of the earth, and you will spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and in your seed will all the families of the earth be blessed. The Seed of David Psalm 132:11 Jehovah has sworn unto David in truth; He will not turn from it: Of the fruit of your body I will set One upon your throne. Isaiah 11:10 And in that day the root of Jesse, Who stands as a banner to the peoples-Him will the nations seek, And His resting place will be the glory.
