Chen is currently the top U.S. scorer (282.85) at international figure skating competitions. He is also the score holder for short program (106.39), free skate (212.08) and overall (318.47) at the U.S. Championships.[1] As of December 10, 2016, he is the only skater in the world capable of landing both the quad lutz and quad flipjumps in competitions.
Nathan Chen was born in Salt Lake City, Utah[2] to Zhidong Chen and Hetty Wang and the youngest of five siblings, older siblings being Alice, Janice, Tony and Colin.[3] He attended West High School (Utah) in Salt Lake City and Rim of the World High Schoolin Lake Arrowhead, California, before enrolling at Connections Academy, an online high school, in August 2013 as a sophomore.[4] In addition to figure skating, Chen trained in ballet with Ballet West Academy[5] as well as competing in gymnastics at the state and regional levels for seven years.
